This is a horror video game, a type of video game where the main gameplay element is to kill enemies. In Juon The Grude Haunted House, the player must hunt down and capture ten evil spirits to stop an evil girl named Hime from being able to use their powers. The ability for players to control different characters adds depth that was not previously available in traditional shooters. It has been said that "people fear what they do not understand" and with this particular release of Juon, they took it one step further by creating something that most people had never seen before. The story is based on an old Japanese legend (one of the five ghost stories of Japan). The story goes that a Buddhist monk made a statue of Buddha, and the statue had a crack on its left cheek. The monk was very angry at having wasted time and resources on such an imperfect piece of work and cursed the statue to never be loved by anyone. He buried it underneath his house and died soon after. When he died, his spirit possessed the statue and brought it to life as a vengeful spirit with no face. This spirit, known in Japan as the Shikome (or "shikome-giri" or "lady with no face"), is believed to be one of the spirits that is very difficult to capture. The player must deal with this possessed statue before it can use its powers to take over someone. The game's title is an acronym summing up the game's key features: Juon The Grudge Haunted House which translates in English to Read The Evil Writings Of The Evil Monk. Juon was released in Japan in April 1998 by an unknown publisher. It was later rediscovered and was released in North America by Namco in 2000 under their Seventh Heaven brand. It was dubbed in English and featured altered dialog from the original Japanese voices. In a rare case, a video game was translated into English before it was translated into its native language. The following is a list of the names of ghost-like creatures that players will see in the game. This list is not complete because there are more for players to encounter, but these are the ones that appear first on the monster menu. Juon The Grudge Haunted House received mixed reviews by critics. It has an aggregate score at GameRankings of 55%. There are two ways to get the game, the first is to buy it off of eBay. The other way is through an unofficial ROM set. Fan translation groups have been transcribing the game into English for both the PC and Xbox 360. The game's popularity has not diminished since its release twenty years ago, with continued sales of over 50,000 units annually across North America, Europe and Japan. The game is very popular in Japan during Halloween season as well as other holidays (Christmas, New Year's Day) where gamers would go to see if they could find one of the Shikome. cfa1e77820
